Batik does not seem complicated until I try to explain the process. The idea sometimes comes from a drawing and sometimes the idea begins as a batik that needs drawing and transferred to fabric. Then begins a process of painting with hot wax and dyeing with cold water dyes, working from light to dark. The dyeing and rinsing processes cause the wax to crack and dye leaks through those fine lines to create the look of batik. I am always anxious to remove the wax from the fabric to see the results but then the ironing can become tedious.
Shibori is another resist process, traditionally using indigo dye. The dye vat has a life so I concentrate on working with shibori as long as it is active. The reveal involves rinsing and releasing the fabric from the bindings, a much easier process than wax removal.
I think I am drawn first to batik because I want to work with the idea of an image.

Group show, 'In Full Bloom'

Since the Platte River flood in 2019 my life has been chaos. Lots of creative decisions made but no art created. I now have a workable studio and some inventory. The pieces I’m exhibiting this month range from the 1980’s to one new painting this year. Over time, I have worked in different genre…landscapes, windows, plein aire, quilts, life drawing and, still my favorite, still life!

Thank you Patsy and Sammy for this opportunity to show with you again. We have been involved with many different groups over the years and I have always had a lot of respect for you and your work. We have each taken many different paths…pottery to abstract, drawing to batik! and painting to assemblage. We keep inspiring and sharing. Our diversity is stimulating.

Thank you, Anne Burkholder.

'Finding Vibrance in the Plains'

There’s something about the place where the earth meets the sky, on the Plains, that pulls me in and captivates me. I use gestural brush strokes to express the lyrical lines flowing through the ground, around the trees and across the horizon line. My unique use of vibrant color helps me convey a positive feeling that I wish for you to experience from viewing my paintings.

'Breathing Room'

Breathing Room is defined as a place that allows one’s spirit to rest and recuperate from the stresses of daily life. Primarily comprised of sketches of a lake in Northwest Ontario, this show captures the peaceful feeling that being on Pakwash Lake provided me. My hope is that the simplicity and framing style will draw the view in, giving them some breathing room of their own.
