Welcome
to my web page. Two series are featured: “Aerial
Landscapes” created
Oct. 2000 - May 2003 and “Deep Shade Gardens”,
my present ongoing series.
As a painter, I am motivated by metaphor. The entrance into
my paintings, which range from abstract to realism, begins with
the symbolism behind them. My last series of Aerial Landscapes were symbolic of diversity and “seeing
the bigger picture” through a variety of patterns, contrast,
shapes, forms and textures of cropland. A tribute to the Midwest
sense of place.
The Deep Shade Gardens represent mystery, abundance, and creativity.
My canvases start out with a dark ground and the light emerges
as reflection off the leaves. I am interested in the up-close
and personal view of the garden, the “inner womb” aspect
of solace and contemplation. The edges of foliage, the shapes
of leaves and the dark cave-like areas intrigue me. Symbolically,
the single leaf also represents the individual in the midst of
others, or community; a theme that is prevalent in many of my
series. My Minnesota roots are apparent in these foliage interpretations,
as I remember the deep shade and dappled sunlight.
I have several one-of-a-kind pieces in the studio, as well as
some portions of past series: “Burning Embers”, “Codex:
Illuminated” (oil pastel on tar paper), Glyphs, landscapes
and still lifes.
I invite you to visit my studio whenever you
are in the area. Appointments are much appreciated.
